SAFE DIY HELP
Simple checks. Safer decisions.
Start with settings, visible obstructions and the user manual. Stop if there is heat, smoke, sparking, electrical tripping or water near electrics.

Know where to stop.
Do not move a heavy appliance alone, work at height, remove electrical covers, handle refrigerant or open a microwave cabinet. Only use procedures the manufacturer permits for the user.
AC: safe first checks
| Symptom | External check | When to get help |
|---|---|---|
| Runs but does not cool | Check cooling mode, temperature setting and an accessible filter. Keep windows closed. | The engineer checks airflow, coil condition, sensors and refrigerant circuit before proposing work. |
| Water drips indoors | Switch off if water is near wiring or a socket. Note where the drip starts. | A drain blockage, incorrect slope, insulation issue or icing needs diagnosis. |
| Unusual noise or tripping | Stop using the AC if it trips repeatedly or smells burnt. | Fan, mounting and electrical checks help identify the cause; do not repeatedly reset the breaker. |
Washing machine: safe first checks
| Symptom | External check | When to get help |
|---|---|---|
| Water stays in the drum | Check for an obvious kink in the visible drain hose. Do not force the locked door. | Drain restrictions, pump faults or control issues need assessment. |
| Machine shakes during spin | Pause safely and redistribute the load; confirm the machine is stable. | Persistent vibration may involve suspension, bearings or installation. |
| Does not start | Check the selected programme, child lock and that the door closes without trapped clothing. | Door-lock, power and control checks distinguish the fault. |
| Leaks or foams heavily | Pause the cycle and isolate power safely if water approaches electrics. | Detergent dose, seals, inlet hoses and internal leaks are checked. |
Refrigerator: safe first checks
| Symptom | External check | When to get help |
|---|---|---|
| Freezer cold, fridge warm | Avoid blocking interior air vents and check that doors close. | Airflow, evaporator fan or defrost faults may be involved. |
| Both compartments warm | Check the power supply and settings without opening any electrical cover. Protect perishable food. | Starting components, controls or the sealed system need assessment. |
| Water under the fridge | Check whether an external water line is leaking, if fitted. | Drain blockage, defrost-water overflow or a connection fault may be responsible. |
| Heavy frost | Make sure food packets do not prevent the door closing. | Seal leaks, moisture entry or defrost faults require diagnosis. |
TV: safe first checks
| Symptom | External check | When to get help |
|---|---|---|
| No picture, sound works | Check the source and whether the menu is visible. Do not press or tap the screen. | Backlight, panel-drive or main-board assessment may be needed. |
| No signal on one input | Select the right source and try a known-good external cable if safe. | The source device, cable or port may be the cause. |
| Vertical lines or cracked display | Switch off and avoid pressure on the display. | Panel replacement cost and availability should be compared with a replacement TV. |
| Apps fail but HDMI works | Check the network and supported app status. | Software or platform issues may be separate from a repairable hardware fault. |
Microwave: safe first checks
| Symptom | External check | When to get help |
|---|---|---|
| Runs but food stays cold | Confirm the selected mode and power setting. Do not run it empty. | Heating-circuit diagnosis is technician-only. |
| Sparks or smells burnt | Stop immediately and disconnect only if safe. | The cavity, waveguide cover and heating system require assessment. |
| Turntable does not rotate | With the appliance off and cool, check that the tray is seated correctly. | Drive motor or coupler inspection may be needed. |
| Door will not close | Remove visible food obstruction gently; never force or alter the latch. | Door and interlock damage needs a professional assessment. |
Dishwasher: safe first checks
| Symptom | External check | When to get help |
|---|---|---|
| Dishes remain dirty | Check loading and that spray arms are not blocked by tall items. | Filter, circulation, heating and detergent-related causes are assessed. |
| Water remains at the bottom | Inspect the visible drain hose for a kink; do not open the base. | Drain-path or pump diagnosis may be needed. |
| Leaks or trips | Stop use and isolate power/water safely. | A technician must assess leaks and electrical safety. |
